Taurasini Irpinia Santo Stefano
Irpinia Campi Taurasini wines are produced under the Irpinia DOC of central Campania, specifically from Aglianico grapes grown on the Campi Taurasi (the ‘Taurasian Fields’). While standard Irpinia wines may be rosso, bianco, rosato, spumante or varietals made from any one of seven grape varieties, Campi Taurasini wines are uniquely red, and based on Aglianico, arguably Campania’s finest red-wine grape variety.
The 20-odd communes covered by this sottozona (sub-area) surround the commune of Taurasi, home of Campania’s most famous modern-day wine (perhaps with the exception of Greco di Tufo).
Tenuta Cavalier Pepe is located in the hearth of docg Campania Wines, Luogosano, Sant’Angelo all’Esca and Taurasi. The estate grows 40 hectares of vineyards and 10 of olive yards. The territory lies on slopes of 350 to 500 mt. above sea level, whilst the vineyards’ exposure is mainly S/SE.
The autumn temperatures here lead to slow ripening of the Aglianico, so late harvests follow, usually between mid-October and the first half of November. All red wines as well as Coda di Volpe grapes, are exclusively grown from company owned vineyards.
Milena Pepe and family personally take care of vine growing, in cooperation with professionals. The main estate’s goal is to produce quality grapes in order to obtain quality wines with moderate yields and limited soils treatments.
